When winter passes away and spring returns, everything rouses up from sleeping. On March 26th, the English week of CBS high school was held. The English week theme activities mainly consisted of three parts – Debate, TED Talk and Dubbing. The main purpose is to make students keenly aware of the importance of learning English. By carrying out a variety of activities, it is efficient to help students practice their critical thinking and oral speaking. At the same time, it is also a good chance for students to apply English to diversified environments outside the class.
First of all, there was a fierce debate about the topic- “Classrooms should be paperless”. The two sides of the debate, Affirmative team and Negative team, were made up of four debaters respectively. They all cooperated well and had active discussion. Then they organized their thoughts carefully, expressing opinions confidently. At the end of the debate, three judges elected a best debater and announced the winner team. The debate was heated and students’ performances were wonderful, which have caught audience’s attentions firmly.
TED talk followed the debate. Nine students took turns to give a speech and everyone prepared well-organized slides for their talks. These TED talks actually aroused resonance of other students because the topics were closely related to high school students’ daily studies and lives. For example, Siena talked about how to release anxiety while Yang discussed the procrastination. Meanwhile, Gary had a talk about time management, which is a fairly important ability in students’ development. Audience enjoyed inspiring talks and truly benefited from them. Then judges announced the champion of this section. All other students were not stingy with applause for their peers.
The last activity was dubbing contest, which was very lively and interesting. Eleven teams selected classic parts of famous TV episodes or films, then they dubbed based on their own understandings. Their performances were quite dramatic, which made audience laugh excitedly. Dubbing revealed that there are wide range of choices when learning English apart from regular practice in class. It is realistic for students to improve English with many different kinds of materials. Active learning can happen in happiness.
Enjoyable moments usually fly faster than usual. The English week of CBS high school came to a happy end. All audience applauded again for students’ active participation and fantastic performance. Just as Mr. Ressol says, learning a good language enables us to know the world better and to be better understood by the world. It is believed that students will be more determined in the love for learning English. Look forward to next year’s English Week with more interesting and creative activities.
