The MYP faculty of Changwai Bilingual School has hosted various activities during the Chinese Culture Week. The activities were structured to promote traditional Chinese culture among our MYP learning community, thus providing learners the opportunity to experience and gain profound knowledge about traditional Chinese culture.
Our team of Chinese teachers prepared 150 bilingual riddles which were strategically hung on lanterns. This interactive activity required students to collaborate with each other, make connections to individual experiences, and tap into their prior knowledge to successfully solve riddles. Students displayed leadership qualities during self-grouping, and immense competitiveness during the activity.
The winning teams of the lantern riddles activity were awarded prizes based on their scores. They excitedly selected the "trophies" of their "mental labor" and took photos to commemorate the event.
To enhance the enjoyment and charm of traditional culture, the MYP faculty arranged five additional activities for the children. The activities consisted of, "Chess Games", "Chinese Calligraphy", "Hand Knitting", "Tea Art" and "Instrument and Hanfu". These rotational activities proved to be fun and engaging for all learners.
Instrument & Hanfu
The workshop focused on the charm of traditional musical instruments and Hanfu. The audience were amazed when “volunteers” showed them how to play Guzheng and Bawu. The history and main characteristics of Hanfu were also explained to the students.
Chess
Amateur chess players demonstrated different types of chess strategies, while competing with their challengers. The competition was enjoyed by all.
Chinese Calligraphy
A member of Jiangsu Calligraphy Association, Mr. Xu Xiaoping taught students how to write Chinese character FU using different types of strokes. Many students were risk takers and attempted their newly acquired skill at writing red couplets and poems.
Hand Knitting
We were fortunate to also receive support from our learning community. A Grade 9B parent, Ms. Rong Yajun facilitated and taught hand knitting. This was a new experience for most of our learners. Students displayed enthusiasm and listened attentively throughout the activity.
Tea Art
We were honored to invite CBS Vice Principal, Ms. Annie Chen (An Intermediate Tea Artist) to give a lecture on tea culture. She demonstrated the art of Oolong tea-making and explained how to savor the taste of the tea.
Through these activities of Chinese Culture Week, students and teachers not only marveled at the variety of traditional culture but were also moved by its long history and profound heritage.
